Aida Severo, led by Philip Somervell spent a day in the studios of Trinity College, London the result was this, their first CD. The music based on compositions by members of the group builds free jazz improvisation on a strong harmonic basis in the jazz tradition.
"... While the melodic and harmonic content of the compositions themselves are largely in line with jazz harmony, the overall forms of the pieces are open to spontaneous alteration. As a result, the structures and dynamics vary greatly, creating a musical environment where there is the possibility of being caught off-balance, of making an arbitrary gesture, but precisely in order to benefit from the lack of formal constraint".
(Philip Somervell)
The pianist/composer Philip chose an existing piece ' House Light', which I had just completed as the main graphic for the CD and the designer Ed Walker converted it into a cover for Aida Severo's stunning part-improvised jazz. Other members of Aida Severo include: Chris Williams on alto saxophone, Joe Egan on trumpet, Colin Somervell on double bass and Vasillis Sarkis on drums. Well worth a Listen!
